DUNS Number
What is a D-U-N-S Number?
The D-U-N-S number is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned to businesses and organizations by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). This number is used to differentiate between companies around the world and is commonly used to confirm information about a company based on its geographical location. Many businesses and organizations already have a D-U-N-S number, though if a new business does not have one, an application for a D-U-N-S number can be made free of charge.
Why do I need a DUNS number?
Businesses looking to enroll into the Apple Developer Program or the Apple Developer Enterprise Program are required to provide a D-U-N-S Number for identity verification and verification as a legal entity. Your business must be an established legal entity, such as an LLC, corporation, or limited partnership. No DBAs, trade names, or fictitious entities are allowed.
Note: For organizations within the government, a D-U-N-S Number is optional.
Note: You don’t require a D-U-N-S Number if you’re enrolling as an individual.
How long does it take to get a D-U-N-S number?
The whole process usually takes up to 30 days. Therefore, businesses need to plan accordingly if the D-U-N-S Number is required for important processes (such as enrolling in the Apple Developer Program). Businesses are recommended to apply in advance to avoid delays.
Is There a Cost Involved in Obtaining a D-U-N-S Number?
No, getting a D-U-N-S Number is completely free. However, if you need it quickly, there is an expedited service option that is available as a fee service.
Requesting a D-U-N-S Number
Your company may already have a free D-U-N-S Number from D&B. Prior to registering with D&B, please check the D-U-N-S Number lookup tool to see if your company has one. If your company isn’t listed, you can submit your business information to obtain a free D-U-N-S Number from D&B.
When requesting a D-U-N-S Number, you will be asked for the following:
- Legal entity name
- Headquarters address
- Mailing address
- Work contact information
After you submit your business information, a representative from D&B may contact you to verify your information. Having documents related to your business registration ready can be beneficial, as D&B may ask follow-up questions to verify who you are, such as the type of business or number of employees.

If you still need additional support, you can:

- If you are in the United States and need a quicker response, you can directly reach the D&B customer service team for their help with your request by calling 866-584-0283.
Additionally, you can contact Apple Developer Support for guidance specific to the Apple Developer Program.
What Should I Do if My Organization Isn’t Listed as a Legal Entity During Apple Developer Enrollment?
If you receive a message indicating that “your organization is not listed as a legal entity,” this means that your organization has an unconfirmed legal status or is listed in the D&B database with a different legal status (such as a sole proprietorship).
To resolve the issue, first check if your organization has a valid D-U-N-S Number. If you think it should be recognized as a legal entity, please gather your business registration documentation and email it to D&B for a status update. When enrolling your organization, please use the proper legal entity name to avoid further complications.
